Lakeside Homes: Summer Care

If you’re one of the lucky people who own a lakeside home, you know that warmer weather means finally unlocking the door and shaking out the cobwebs. But before you can start enjoying your long summer of fishing, kayaking, and lazing by the water, you need to take care of your home.

Most homeowners know about the maintenance that they need to do on their homes in the off-season. After all, nobody wants to come back to their house to find that the pipes burst or mice got into the house. However, few people remember that they also need to maintain their home in the summer while they are having fun.

The summer season, with all its activities and sweltering weather, can take a toll on your home. Here are some ways that you can maintain it year-round.

Opening for the Season

Before you get ready to hit the water, you need to hit all the items on your maintenance checklist.

First, restart any systems that you shut off over the winter, such as water or electricity. Then, conduct a thorough inspection of your house for any damage. Your furnace or pipes could have picked up wear and tear over the winter, and it is best to repair them now rather than later in the season when it becomes a headache.

Finally, make sure that you are well-supplied. This includes food, but you should also restock first aid kits, batteries, and make sure that any smoke or carbon monoxide detectors are working.

Property Maintenance

If your waterfront property includes some greenery or a lawn, you will also need to maintain that area during the summer. Summer can be harsh on vegetation due to hot temperatures and low rainfall.

During the summer, make sure to water your lawn regularly. Before the season starts, you should clear out any debris such as dead leaves and weeds. If your lawn is looking a little worse for wear, spread some fertilizer to help it grow better.

Part of the appeal of a waterside home is getting back to nature, however, your little corner of greenery will require some maintenance during the warm months.

Painting

Your lakeside home will probably need repainting more often than your regular home due to wear and tear from the wind and spray. If your home looks like it needs a paint job this summer, first you will need to clear the sides of any mildew or other residue. Then, use durable paint such as acrylic latex paints. Painting your home regularly is not only important for aesthetics, but it also helps protect the wood from water damage and weathering.

Security

No matter how much you would like to do so, chances are you will not be spending all of your time at your lakeside home this summer. While you’re at work, make sure that thieves don’t make off with your valuables by securing your home. Install a security system, or use good old-fashioned common sense by installing secure locks and not leaving valuables unattended.
